Financial course fees for investors are getting ridiculously expensive. In the Lehman Brothers debacle, some investors parted with their life savings to learn complex financial terms, like collaterized debt obligations, derivatives, credit default swaps, first to default, credit linked notes, etc.

The Straits Time Index was down 15.57 points to close at 2860.51 Tuesday, a relatively muted response (fortunately) amid regional markets turbulence.
The stock market desperately needs a stimulus and what better than to see Dow Jones rallying by 331 points, reversing 3 consecutive loss sessions.
I expect stocks on the SGX to rally today and UOB gave me a pleasant surprise. Read the full article here.

Merrill Lynch has taken drastic steps to rescue its ailing balance sheet – most notably, a fire sale of $30 billion of risky debts to Lonestar.
Merrill also revealed another $6 billion of mortgage write-downs this quarter, right after last week’s report of a $5 billion loss. That is already $40-billion of write-downs, and we are still counting.

With mounting losses (first quarter loss of $2.8 billion), management turmoil and a falling stock price (70% down this year and no sign of reversing), it seems likely that Lehman, the fourth-largest U.S. securities firm, will follow the footsteps of Bear Stearns and be sold at rock-bottom prices.

In the recent survey of 2,300 Singaporeans conducted by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, it was found that 60 per cent among those earning under $1,000 gambled, up from 50 per cent in 2005.
Three-quarters of respondents started gambling as early as 24 or younger and most view gambling as a leisure activity.
