Bull vs Bear battle rages on in the Singapore stock exchange. The Straits Times Index increased by a mere 9.09 points to 3143.89. Trading volume was weak at 1002.7 million. Gainers/Losers stood at 234/268.
To me, such a market performance is poor especially when we consider a multitude of positive news for the US economy.

Monday, the STI breached the 3200 barrier before the break, but after resuming trading, it slided to end 4.75 points down at 3188.05.
Widespread anxiety was ignited by concerns about the financial sector after S&P cut its debt rating on Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers, and Morgan Stanley from “stable” to “negative.”

The SGX experienced mild turbulence last Monday as oil hit an all-time high of $135 a barrel but gained momentum to end on a high, following a Wall Street rally on Thursday. Nonetheless, Friday Dow Jones was a mixed bag of results – buying and selling forces tugged the index lower by 7.90 points.
Nasdaq rose for the fourth session in a row with Dell’s better than expected earnings and Apple’s ipod summer extravaganza.

When a stock is added to an index, it is a testimony that the company has successfully created stockholder value.
A buying frenzy usually follows, especially mutual funds who scramble to add the stock to their portfolio.
The higher demand, coupled with limited shares in the market, inevitably drive the stock price higher.
